Smile Design
Personalised aesthetic and functional smile planning using Digital Smile Design (DSD) to assess tooth shape, colour, proportions and position, and determine which treatments may help achieve a natural, harmonious result tailored to you.
WHAT SMILE DESIGN CAN DO
Smile Design provides a comprehensive assessment of tooth shape, size, colour and position, as well as their relationship with the gums, lips, bite and face.
The aim is to identify, before treatment begins, which changes may genuinely improve the smile and which treatments may be needed. Smile Design therefore does not necessarily mean having veneers, and the same treatment is not appropriate for every patient.
In some cases, teeth whitening, small restorations or conservative treatment may be enough. In others, veneers, orthodontics, crowns, prosthetic treatment or dental implants may need to be combined within a coordinated plan.
The goal is a balanced, aesthetic smile without losing sight of dental health, the bite, function and a natural-looking result.
Every smile starts from a different clinical situation. Planning allows us to assess the factors that may influence appearance, balance and function together, including:
Size, length, width and proportion of the teeth visible when smiling.
Tooth shade, staining, darkening or differences in colour between teeth.
Tooth position, crowding, gaps, angulation and the smile midline.
Gum contour, gingival display and the proportion between teeth and soft tissues.
Aesthetic planning should also take the bite and treatment stability into account.
Missing teeth and, where relevant, the bone available for rehabilitation may also influence the final smile design.
DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN (DSD)
Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a digital approach to aesthetic and functional dental planning. It allows us to assess the smile before treatment begins and determine which procedures may genuinely improve its appearance, proportions and function.
There is no standard combination of treatments. Some patients may need a single procedure, while others may benefit from coordinated treatment across different areas of dentistry.
Recommendations are made individually after assessing the teeth, gums, bite, tooth position and the patient’s goals.
Teeth whitening
May improve tooth shade and brightness when tooth shape and position are suitable but there is staining or discolouration.
Discuss teeth whiteningDental veneers
May be used to change the shape, size, proportion or colour of selected teeth when clinically appropriate.
View dental veneersOrthodontics
When tooth position or the bite affects smile aesthetics, orthodontics may form part of the plan before other treatments.
Discuss orthodonticsOral rehabilitation and implants
If teeth are damaged or missing, the plan may include crowns, prosthetic treatment or dental implants to restore function and aesthetics.

Smile Design helps us assess, plan and sequence treatment before it begins, so that each decision reflects the patient’s individual features and goals.
We assess the teeth, gums, bite, previous restorations and the aesthetic concerns or changes the patient would like to discuss.
Depending on the case, photographs, intraoral scans and other records may be used as part of digital smile planning to assess proportions, alignment, the midline and the relationship with the lips and face.
A treatment sequence is established and may include teeth whitening, veneers, orthodontics, restorations, prosthetic treatment or implant dentistry, depending on the findings.
Where appropriate, Digital Smile Design (DSD) or a mock-up may help visualise selected changes and align expectations before definitive treatment.
Treatment is carried out according to the planned sequence, followed by reviews of adaptation, function, aesthetic outcome and maintenance needs.
Veneers + teeth whitening: two treatments that may be combined within personalised planning to improve the smile.
NATURAL-LOOKING SMILE DESIGN
Good Smile Design is not about creating identical teeth or changing your expression. Planning should respect proportions, function and individual features to achieve an integrated, natural-looking result.
Allows the case to be assessed and decisions made before definitive treatment begins.
Shape, size and proportion are assessed in relation to the lips, expression and facial features.
Helps avoid excessive treatment when more conservative alternatives may achieve the desired objective.
Smile aesthetics are planned with the bite and dental health in mind.
In selected cases, digital design or a mock-up can help preview certain changes.
The aim is improvement without standardisation: preserving individuality and avoiding an artificial result.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SMILE DESIGN
We answer some of the most common questions before Smile Design treatment. The treatment plan, timing and cost depend on each patient’s individual needs.
What exactly is Smile Design?
Smile Design, including Digital Smile Design (DSD), is personalised aesthetic and functional planning that assesses tooth shape, colour, size and position and their relationship with the gums, lips, bite and face. It helps define which procedures may improve the smile and the most appropriate sequence.
Can I preview the result before treatment begins?
In selected cases, photographs, scanning, digital planning or a mock-up may be used to help preview certain changes before definitive treatment. Whether this is appropriate depends on the individual case.
Which treatments can Smile Design include?
Depending on the patient’s needs, the plan may include teeth whitening, veneers, orthodontics, restorations, crowns, prosthetic treatment, dental implants or gum treatment. Not every patient needs the same procedures.
Is Smile Design the same as having veneers?
No. Veneers are one treatment that may form part of Smile Design, but they are not necessary in every case. Digital Smile Design is the planning process, while a broader smile makeover may combine several treatments. Planning may also identify more conservative alternatives.
How long does Smile Design treatment take?
It depends on the treatment required. Some cases may be completed with relatively straightforward procedures, while others need several stages if they involve orthodontics, veneers, oral rehabilitation, prosthetic treatment or dental implants.
How much does Smile Design cost?
There is no single price because Smile Design is personalised. Cost depends on the treatments included, the number of teeth involved, the materials and the complexity of the case. After assessment, we provide a personalised quotation for the treatments indicated.
Does Smile Design hurt?
The assessment and planning stage is not painful. Any discomfort depends on the treatments included in the plan, as teeth whitening, orthodontics, veneers and implant-supported rehabilitation are very different procedures.
What if I need orthodontics or dental implants before aesthetic treatment?
Smile Design helps establish the right treatment sequence. If tooth position, the bite or missing teeth affect the result, these issues may need to be addressed first, followed by the planned aesthetic treatment.
