    What is an infraorbital implant?

The infraorbital implant, also known as a tear trough implant, is a customized prosthesis designed to correct the lack of volume in the lower rim of the eye.

Its goal is to permanently eliminate the “sunken eye” appearance and the under eye furrow, creating a smooth and natural transition between the lower eyelid and cheek.

Unlike resorbable fillers, the infraorbital implant offers a definitive solution. At Face Clinic, our maxillofacial surgeons use 3D technology to create an implant that perfectly fits your anatomy, rejuvenating the look in a predictable and long-lasting way. If you are looking for a permanent solution for your dark circles under your eyes, ask for an evaluation with our experts.

    When are infraorbital implants indicated?

Eyebrow implants are the ideal and permanent solution for various aesthetic concerns of the midface:

    1. Sunken or marked dark circles under the eyes (tear trough): This is their main indication. They correct the sagging that creates shadows and the appearance of tiredness.
    2. Lack of support in the middle third: Patients with flat cheekbones or who have lost bone volume with age benefit greatly.
    3. “Sunken eyes” or enophthalmos: They bring projection to the area, making the eye appear less sunken in the orbit.
    4. Permanent alternative to hyaluronic acid: For those who are looking for a definitive solution and do not want repeated filler treatments.
    5. Complement to blepharoplasty: They are often combined with eyelid surgery to achieve a comprehensive rejuvenation of the gaze.

If you identify with any of these situations, you could be an ideal candidate. The best way to find out is with a personalized assessment. At Face Clinic, our team of surgeons will evaluate your case to offer you the most appropriate solution.

What is the infraorbital implant procedure?

The placement of an eyelid implant is an outpatient, precise and safe surgery that is performed in the following steps:

    1. Consultation and 3D Planning: A facial CT scan is performed to computer design a customized 3D implant, which is perfectly adapted to the patient’s anatomy and objectives.
    2. Anesthesia: The procedure is performed under conscious sedation and local anesthesia in our minor surgery operating room, guaranteeing a painless experience without the need for hospitalization.
    3. Incision: The surgeon makes a small incision inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival route) or just below the eyelashes, so the scar is completely invisible or imperceptible.
    4. Placement and fixation: A precise pocket is created on the infraorbital bone to accommodate the implant. Once positioned, it is fixed with a titanium micro-screw to ensure that it does not move.
    5. Recovery: As it is an outpatient surgery, the patient can go home the same day. Swelling and possible bruising subside in 1-2 weeks.
    6. Definitive results: The results are visible from the first moment, although they improve as the inflammation goes down, reaching their final appearance in a few months. The result is permanent and rejuvenates the look in a natural way.

What is the price of an infraorbital implant?

The price of a custom infraorbital implant depends on the complexity of the case and the custom design of the 3D prosthesis. The final cost includes planning, fabrication of the PEEK or titanium implant, medical team fees and operating room expenses.

In Face Clinic we will provide you with a closed and detailed budget after a first consultation with our surgeon. Find out more about our financing options.

Is there any risk in infraorbital implant surgery?

Like any surgical procedure, it has certain risks, although these are infrequent and are minimized with expert planning and execution:

    1. Infection and hematoma: These are the most common risks of any surgery, minimized with a sterile protocol and postoperative care.
    2. Implant malposition or asymmetry: This is prevented by precise 3D planning and fixation of the implant to the bone.
    3. Alteration of sensation: There may be a temporary numbness in the cheek or upper lip, which is usually transient.
    4. Implant visibility: A poorly designed or placed implant can be visible. Face Clinic’s custom 3D design avoids this problem.
    5. Palpebral problems (ectropion): Very rare, it can occur if the eyelid support is altered. That is why it is crucial to have it performed by an expert surgeon.

At Face Clinic, our surgeons ‘ expertise in orbital anatomy, together with 3D planning and a scarless approach, reduces these risks to a minimum, ensuring safe and natural results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Infraorbital Implants

Infraorbital implants or filling of dark circles under the eyes with hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid filler is an excellent temporary option. The infraorbital implant is the definitive and permanent solution for sunken eyebrows. At Face Clinic, our surgeons will explain the advantages of each one so that you can make the best decision according to your long-term goals.

Is the scar of the eyebrow implant visible?

No. At Face Clinic we perform the incision inside the eyelid (transconjunctival route), so it does not leave any visible scar on the skin. It is a safe and aesthetically impeccable technique that our specialists master. Make an appointment and we will show you.

Is the surgery for dark circles under the eyes painful?

No. The procedure is performed under conscious sedation, so you will be relaxed and feel no pain. At Face Clinic, an anesthesiologist doctor accompanies you during the entire procedure, guaranteeing your maximum comfort and safety.

Who is the ideal candidate for an infraorbital implant?

The ideal candidate is a person with a marked under-eye furrow, lack of cheekbone volume or a “sunken eye” appearance, who is looking for a permanent solution. If you are looking for predictable and definitive results, make an appointment at Face Clinic and our team of surgeons will evaluate your case.

How long is the recovery time for this surgery?

Recovery is quick. You can go home the same day and the swelling or possible bruises usually disappear in 7 to 10 days. In Face Clinic we will give you all the guidelines for a comfortable postoperative period and an exhaustive follow-up of your evolution.

What material are the implants for dark circles under the eyes made of?

In Face Clinic we use titanium implants or PEEK (Polyether-ether-ether-ketone) custom designed by computer. It is a 100% biocompatible material, safe and that does not reabsorb, which guarantees a stable result for life. Ask our specialists for more information.

Are the results of the implant permanent?

Yes, absolutely. Unlike fillers, the infraorbital implant is a solid piece that does not degrade. The result you get with Face Clinic specialists is a definitive solution to correct dark circles and rejuvenate your eyes.

Can it be combined with blepharoplasty?

Yes, and it is a very powerful combination. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin or fat bags, and infraorbital implant restores lost volume. At Face Clinic, our surgeons can perform both procedures at the same time for a comprehensive rejuvenation of the gaze. Consult your case with us.
