Dental bone loss is a reduction in the density or volume of the bone in the upper or lower jaw. It may be related to periodontitis, long-term tooth loss, infections or systemic factors. It can cause tooth mobility, gum recession or difficulty placing dental implants, and treatment depends on the cause and severity of the bone loss.

What dental bone loss is

Dental bone loss is the reduction in the quantity or density of the maxillary or mandibular bone that supports the teeth. Bone needs constant functional stimulation, produced when chewing and biting, to maintain its volume. When that stimulus disappears, or when a disease process destroys the supporting tissues, the bone may gradually resorb.

Not all patients have the same degree of bone loss. It may be mild and localised, for example after a tooth extraction, or it may be more extensive when associated with advanced periodontitis, infections or systemic disease.

Assessing dental bone loss therefore requires studying the affected area, the likely cause, the condition of the neighbouring teeth and gums and, where relevant, whether a future dental implant could be viable.
