CO2 Laser for the Face: What It’s For, Results and Recovery
The CO2 laser is one of the most powerful treatments in aesthetic medicine for improving the quality of facial skin. It renews the skin’s surface and stimulates collagen, with results that in many cases are hard to match. But it is also one of the treatments that raises the most questions, especially around what the face looks like afterwards and how long recovery takes. In this article we explain it all in detail and without alarmism.

What is the CO2 laser and how does it work on facial skin?
The CO2 laser is an ablative technology: it emits a beam of light that is absorbed by the water in skin cells, precisely removing the most superficial layers that are damaged or aged. In doing so, it triggers a natural regeneration process and stimulates the production of new collagen, which improves firmness, texture and tone.
It is worth distinguishing between two ways of applying it:
- Full ablative CO2 laser: treats the entire surface of the skin. It is more intense and delivers very striking results, but involves a longer recovery.
- Fractional CO2 laser: creates micro-columns of treatment while leaving healthy skin intact around each point. This speeds up recovery and reduces risks while maintaining excellent results. It is the most widely used approach today.
What is the CO2 laser used for on the face?
The CO2 laser is highly versatile and tackles several signs of ageing and skin concerns at the same time. These are its main indications.
Sun spots and uneven pigmentation
It helps to fade dark spots and solar lentigines and to even out the tone of the face, removing the layers with irregular pigmentation and encouraging new, more uniform skin to emerge.
Fine lines and expression wrinkles
It is particularly effective on fine and moderate wrinkles, such as perioral lines (the “barcode” lines around the lips) or periocular lines (crow’s feet), by renewing the skin and stimulating collagen.
Acne scars and skin marks
One of its star applications. The CO2 laser significantly improves atrophic acne scars and other marks, smoothing the surface and making the skin more even.
Mild skin laxity and loss of texture
By stimulating collagen, it provides a firming effect and improves texture in cases of mild or superficial laxity, giving the skin a smoother, more toned appearance.
Enlarged pores and dull skin
It refines enlarged pores and restores radiance to dull or tired-looking skin, improving the overall quality of the complexion.
Benefits of the CO2 laser on the face compared with other treatments
Let’s be honest: the CO2 laser is not the treatment for everything, and it is not always the best option. But in certain cases it is hard to match. Compared with other techniques:
- Compared with chemical peels, the CO2 laser works in a deeper and more controlled way, with more powerful results on wrinkles and scars.
- Compared with radiofrequency, which mainly targets firmness, the laser renews the skin’s surface as well as stimulating collagen.
- Compared with intense pulsed light (IPL), which is more focused on superficial spots and redness, the laser offers a more comprehensive improvement in texture and wrinkles.
In short: when you are looking for a deep, long-lasting change in texture, scars or photoageing, the CO2 laser is usually one of the best tools available. For milder improvements or maintenance, other techniques may be more suitable. You can find the full explanation of the procedure on the fractional CO2 laser page.
What does the face look like after CO2 laser? What to expect at each stage
This is probably the biggest concern. Recovery is temporary and predictable, and knowing what to expect in advance helps you go through it with peace of mind. Here it is, stage by stage (timings are approximate and depend on the intensity of the treatment).
First 48-72 hours: redness, swelling and discomfort
The skin is left red and swollen, with a sensation similar to severe sunburn: heat, tightness and some discomfort. This is the most dramatic-looking stage, but also the shortest. It is well controlled with the recommended aftercare.
First week: peeling and skin renewal
The redness starts to subside and peeling with micro-crusts appears as the skin renews itself. It is essential not to touch or pick off the crusts: they must fall off on their own. By the end of the week, most patients already look considerably better.
Second and third week: new, slightly sensitive skin
New skin emerges, pinker, finer and more sensitive. Some redness may persist, gradually fading over time. The skin is still recovering and needs protection and care.
From one month onwards: when the real results appear
The result is not immediate: the improvements continue to develop over weeks and even months, because collagen production carries on. From one month onwards you can already see more even, smoother and more radiant skin, and the improvement continues progressively.
Aftercare following CO2 laser on the face
Aftercare is key to a good result and a complication-free recovery. These are the essentials.
Hydration and sun protection: the two pillars
These are the most important:
- Constant hydration to support regeneration and relieve tightness.
- Strict sun protection (high SPF), avoiding direct sun exposure. New skin is highly vulnerable to pigmentation, so this point is non-negotiable.
Which products to apply and which to avoid
Apply the regenerating and soothing products recommended by your specialist. During recovery you must avoid aggressive actives (acids, retinoids, exfoliants) and any cosmetics that have not been recommended, as they could irritate the skin.
Activities and habits to pause during recovery
You should temporarily avoid:
- Intense exercise, sweating, heat and saunas.
- Swimming pools and the sea.
- Direct sun and tanning beds.
- Alcohol and tobacco, which slow down healing.
When you can go back to make-up and normal life
Patients usually return to their social and working life once the most visible redness subsides and the peeling has finished (often around the first week, depending on the intensity). Make-up should wait until the skin has closed and regenerated, always following your specialist’s guidance.
How many CO2 laser sessions are needed on the face?
It depends on the goal and the condition of the skin. In many cases, a single session already delivers significant results, particularly for overall rejuvenation and texture improvement.
Other cases, such as deep acne scars or advanced photoageing, may require several sessions, usually spaced a few weeks apart to allow the skin to recover fully between treatments. The key idea: the laser improves the skin considerably, but does not stop natural ageing, so maintaining good habits prolongs the results.
Who can have CO2 laser on the face and who cannot?
It is a safe treatment when properly indicated, but it is not suitable for everyone. Careful assessment is needed (or the treatment may be advised against) in the following cases:
- Darker skin tones: higher risk of pigmentation changes, which is why particularly careful assessment and adjustment are required.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Active skin conditions or infections in the area to be treated.
- A tendency to keloids or abnormal scarring.
- Recent treatment with isotretinoin (for acne), due to its effect on healing.
That is why a prior medical assessment is essential, reviewing your skin type, medical history and medication. The aim is not to alarm you, but to ensure the treatment is safe and effective in your case.
CO2 laser at Face Clinic: process, assessment and results
At Face Clinic, CO2 laser treatment is always carried out after an individualised medical assessment. During the initial consultation, your skin type is analysed, along with the goal you are pursuing (dark spots, wrinkles, scars, texture…) and any factors that might make it advisable to adjust or postpone the treatment.
From there, the intensity and protocol are personalised to balance results and recovery time, and you are given the pre- and post-treatment care guidelines to optimise your progress. You can find all the details of the treatment on the fractional CO2 laser page.
If you have dark spots, acne marks or fine lines, or your skin looks dull, and you want to know whether the CO2 laser is right for you, we invite you to request an assessment so we can design a plan tailored to your skin and your goals.
