    What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is one of the most performed surgeries by our surgeons, because the nose is one of the main structures of the face, making it one of the most important features, and therefore its aesthetic importance.

Its objective is to correct aspects of the nose that affect its functionality, that may make it disproportionate or that are not in harmony with the rest of the face.

With rhinoplasty we can decrease or increase the size of the nose, vary the shape of the tip and dorsum, narrow the nostrils or change the angle between the upper lip and the nose.

In addition, we can also solve certain congenital problems, trauma and respiratory problems.

    Rhinoplasty

    When is rhinoplasty indicated?

Among others, it is indicated for:

    • For all those who want an improvement in their appearance, or wish to improve their self-esteem (reduce or increase the nose, change the tip…).
    • Patients who want to reduce the nostrils.
    • Patients who wish to change the angle or profile of the nose, lowering a prominent dorsum(ridge).
    • Correct a long, wide, crooked or deviated nose.
    • Refine the size of a bulbous or rounded tip.
    • Solve cases of breathing difficulties immediately, even allowing to solve chronic snoring problems.
    • In case of injury or accident, it allows for complete reconstruction of the affected area.
    • Treat a congenital defect or injury.

The purpose is to help improve the appearance of the nose and its respiratory function (if necessary).

Current treatment for the nose adopts a “less is more” approach; the goal is to manipulate the nose so that it maintains the ideal anatomy without being too assertive, and so that the result is natural and in proportion to the face.

    + Aquiline nose
    + Flat nose
    + Big nose
    + Negroid nose
    + Small nose
    + Crooked nose
    + Nose with ridge
    + Wide nose
+ Globular nose or bulbous nasal tip

The results depend largely on the anatomy of the nose, particularly the skin, and the skill and judgment of the surgeon.

At Face Clinic the goal is to have a beautiful nose, balanced with the facial features and natural looking, always keeping in mind that the nose is designed to breathe, so any change made by the surgeon must always put the safety of the respiratory system first.

    How is rhinoplasty performed?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that usually lasts between one and two hours, depending on the complexity of each case. It is performed in an operating room under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, and usually requires hospitalization.

The procedure begins by separating the skin of the nose from the underlying bony and cartilaginous structures. These structures are reshaped to the desired shape, and the skin is then repositioned and sutured. Incisions are usually made inside the nostrils, although in some cases an open surgical approach with an incision in the columella may be necessary.

At the end of the surgery, a splint is placed over the nose to maintain its new shape and nasal packing may be used to prevent bleeding and stabilize the nasal septum. These plugs are usually removed after one or two days.

The patient is usually discharged the day after surgery. During the first two or three days, swelling and bruising around the eyes peaks, but usually disappears in about two weeks. It is normal to experience a slight nose bleed in the first few days. The splint is removed after one to two weeks.

What are the types of rhinoplasty?

There are several types of rhinoplasty, and each is tailored to the specific needs of the patient.

    Depending on the surgical technique

There are several types depending on the surgical technique used. Some of the most common are:

    • Ultrasonic rhinoplasty: Uses an ultrasonic device to modify the bony structures of the nose, achieving a precise reshaping of the profile.
    • Open rhinoplasty: Involves the removal of skin and superficial tissues to access the nasal structure. It is used especially for touch-ups or corrections of previous surgeries.
    • Closed rhinoplasty: It is performed through incisions inside the nostrils, without the need for external cuts. It is the most common technique.

    According to respiratory alteration

In this case, each type is aimed at improving specific aspects of nasal function, and the choice of procedure will depend on the nature and severity of the respiratory alterations present in each patient.

    • Septoplasty: Performed to correct functional problems such as difficulty breathing through the nose due to a deviated septum.
    • Ultrasonic rhinoseptoplasty: Combines aesthetic and functional correction, using ultrasound to align the nasal septum and improve airflow.
    • Reconstructive rhinoplasty: Used to repair the nasal structure after injuries, previous surgeries or congenital malformations, addressing both aesthetics and function.

According to history of previous surgery

Types depending on the history of previous surgery may include:

    • It is called primary rhinoplasty, when the nose has not been modified by any previous surgery.
    • Secondary rhinoplasty corrects previous nose surgeries whose results have not been as expected.

    According to ethnicity or population

Types of rhinoplasty may vary by ethnicity or population due to differences in nasal anatomy and facial characteristics unique to each ethnic group.

    • Rhinoplasty in men: Although the techniques are similar to those for women, they are adjusted to male anatomical differences and aesthetic preferences.
    • Caucasian rhinoplasty:It seeks to improve the size, shape, and function of the nose, correcting the dorsum, tip and septal deviations.
    • African-American rhinoplasty:Focuses on reducing nasal width, defining the tip and improving facial harmony, taking into account thicker skin and a wider nose.
    • Asian rhinoplasty: Work is performed to elevate the tip, reduce the dorsum and define the nasal bridge, respecting ethnic characteristics and facial harmony.
    • Hispanic or Latin rhinoplasty: It seeks to correct the size, shape and improve breathing, preserving the distinctive features of the nose.

    María Carmen Trueba Iglesias

Very satisfied with the clinic and the treatment by the staff. Dr. Riba, who performed a complex rhinoplasty, seemed to me a great professional and very close. I also appreciate very much the attention of Miguela, pending to organize everything and very pleasant treatment.

    Sergio Alvarez

Perfect rhinoseptoplasty operation. Pre and postoperative care was excellent and I always felt in very good hands. The result of the operation exceeds even my best expectations. It is a great clinic and I will count on them again in the future.

    Lourdes R. Martínez

I would not hesitate in the least to recommend Dr. Riba for any maxillofacial treatment, admirable his preparation and dedication.
Apart from being an expert in medicine, in cosmetic surgery treatments, he shows class and refinement, flees from vulgarity and excesses.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Rhinoplasty

Which is the best rhinoplasty surgeon in Spain?

The best rhinoplasty surgeon in Spain must have specialized training in facial cosmetic surgery, extensive experience and a proven track record of successful results. In addition, it is essential that he/she belongs to professional associations such as SECPRE (Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery).

At Face Clinic, we work with the best rhinoplasty surgeons, specialists recognized for their skill, natural results and personalized approach to each patient.

What is the most difficult part of a rhinoplasty?

The most difficult part of rhinoplasty is achieving a perfect balance between aesthetics and nasal function. Surgeons must consider both facial harmony and the patient’s breathing.

In addition, the complexity lies in correcting deformities of the nose without compromising its internal structure. The techniques used, such as ultrasonic rhinoplasty, allow these adjustments to be made with greater precision.

How long does it take for the nose to deflate after rhinoplasty?

The process of deflation of the nose may take 2 to 3 weeks for significant initial swelling. However, the entire process of deflation and tissue tightening can take up to 12 months.

Postoperative swelling is normal and will gradually decrease with time.

What can deform the nose after rhinoplasty?

Several factors can affect the outcome after surgery. These include trauma or blows to the nose, infections, failure to follow postoperative recommendations or smoking.

It is crucial to avoid these actions to ensure that the results are stable in the long term.

How long does rhinoplasty recovery take?

Full recovery varies, but in general, patients can resume normal activities in approximately 2 weeks, although it is recommended to avoid strenuous exertion during the first month.

The final healing process can take up to a year, as the nose continues to adjust over time.

What type of rhinoplasty is best?

It will depend on the specific needs and objectives of each patient. There are different techniques, such as closed rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty and ultrasonic rhinoplasty.

The choice will depend on factors such as the patient’s nasal structure, the complexity of the surgery and the desired results. The surgeon will recommend the best option after a thorough evaluation.

What does a rhinoplasty look like after 3 months?

At 3 months after rhinoplasty, the shape of the nose begins to stabilize, although there may still be some swelling at the tip.

The final results are usually visible after 12 months, but after three months it is possible to see a considerable improvement in nasal appearance.

How does the face change after rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, the nose acquires a more harmonious shape with the rest of the face, improving facial proportion. The changes are subtle but significant, and contribute to greater facial symmetry and harmony.

The result can improve the patient’s self-esteem and confidence by correcting imperfections or asymmetries.

What can not be done after rhinoplasty?

After rhinoplasty, it is important to avoid activities that can damage the nose, such as strenuous physical exertion, smoking, touching or squeezing the nose, and prolonged sun exposure.

In addition, it is advisable to avoid wearing heavy glasses for several weeks to prevent any pressure on the nose.

What is the best age to have a rhinoplasty?

The best age for rhinoplasty is generally after facial development is complete, which is usually between the ages of 16 and 18 in females and between the ages of 18 and 21 in males.

However, if the surgery is performed for functional reasons, such as respiratory problems, it may be appropriate at any age, provided the patient is in good general health.

What is the worst rhinoplasty day?

The worst day is usually the first day after surgery, when swelling and discomfort are most intense.

It is normal to feel some discomfort, but this improves significantly after the second or third day, with the help of medication for pain and inflammation.

What are the disadvantages of rhinoplasty?

Although rhinoplasty is generally safe, its disadvantages include the risk of surgical complications, the need for a recovery that can be uncomfortable and lengthy, and the possibility that the results may not be exactly as expected. In addition, some patients may need touch-up surgery to adjust minor details.
